On Saturday 8th May, Glasgow University Ski & Snowboard Club will hold it’s AGM in the GUU. We’ll have a brief AGM in the Reading Room, which will be comprised of the president’s and treasurer’s reports and the voting in of our new constitution, followed by election of next year’s committee. Afterwards we’ll head down to Deep 6 for the rest of the night.

The GUSSC AGM is always a massive social occasion, and watching the committee candidate’s speeches always provides some entertainment..

To nominate yourself/someone else for a committee position you must email president@gussc.com with your name, matric and desired position by 5pm on Monday 3rd May. To find out more about positions available, click below.

President

In overall charge. Oversees, delegates and makes sure that everything that needs to gets done. First point of contact for sponsors. Must have one years GUSSC committee experience.

Treasurer

In control of the finances of a club that has tens of thousands of pounds going in an out of the accounts every year. Must have impeccable attention to detail and a decent grasp of figures.

Secretary

Keeps the membership list up to date. Liases with GUSA. Sells club merchandise. Keeps minutes at committee meetings.

Anyone standing for election for the positions of President, Treasurer and Secretary must be able to attend the GUSA CCS meeting on Tuesday 4 May! As our AGM is after this crucial meeting it is important that all potential office holders can attend.

Trips Convenor

A new position this year. Will run both the Christmas/New Year Trip and BUSC Main Event. The Trips Convenor will liase with tour companies and be fully involved in the planning of the Christmas/New Year trip.

Ski Captain

Has the responsibility of organising training for the ski race team as well as co-ordinating entries for all competitions.

Snowboard Captain

Has the responsibility of organising training for the snowboard race team as well as co-ordinating entries for all competitions.

Freestyle Captain

Has the responsibility of organising training for the freestyle team (ski and board) as well as co-ordinating entries for all competitions.

Social Convenor

Organises all the GUSSC social events throughout the year. Is a key point of contact for the bar/nightclub sponsor.

Lessons Convenor

Will organise all recreational lessons, as well as non-team race and freestyle training for GUSSC members.

Scottish Trips Convenor*

Has the responsibility of organising all trips up North and to Xscape. Also responsible for running hire from the club hut.

* NOTE: To be eligible for this role you must have passed the University minibus driving test or be eligible to do so by January 1st 2011. To be eligible for this you must be 21, have a clean driving licence, and have been driving for a minimum of 2 years. Scottish Trips Convenor must also pass the Salomon technicians course (or equivalent), paid for by the club. This is to comply with insurance regulations and to ensure competence in ski and board hire.

If no-one applies for this role who is able to drive a minibus, or due to the acquisition of driving penalties the incumbent becomes unable to drive a minibus during his/her tenure then the position will become null and void and the duties of it distributed amongst the remaining committee members.

As well as duties specific to each position each committee member will be required to help out throughout Freshers’ week and at key events throughout the year, including being present at our sponsor club each week. For President prepare to spend an average of 20 hours/week on GUSSC business, for Treasurer and Secretary 10-15, and for other positions 5-10 hours.

Being on the GUSSC committee looks great on a C.V and helps you gain excellent people and business management skills. It comes with a lot of responsibility and is hard work but above all is awesome fun.

The above makes more sense than the acceptance speeches ever will.
